Le roi Ahab, la bible et l’archéologie
« Biblical archaeology liberates me, as a traditional Jew, from the constraints of the text »
The adjectives used by the writer in this sentence reveal his deceit.
« Biblical acheology » ? you’re either an archeologist or you’re not. Just because you’re digging in northen Israel does not make you a biblical archeologist. The term biblical archeology was and stil is much used by christians scholars who want to « prove the bible ». Exactly the OPPOSITE of what the writer is showing.
« traditionnal jew » ? the writer is a reform rabbi. The point of reform judaism is precisely to reform, to change judaism. You cannot be « traditionnal » and « reformed » just like you cannot be orthodox and liberal at the same time.
Once you remove those two misused adjectives, you’re left with the real message : « Archeology liberates me, as a jew, from the constraints of the text [ie the Bible] ».
